Best Travel Time & Climate
France stretches from the English Channel to the Mediterranean and from the Atlantic coast to the Alps — accordingly, the climate is diverse.
🔴 High Season: July – August
All of France goes on vacation — the grandes vacances. Beaches on the Côte d'Azur and the Atlantic are full, prices at their maximum (50–100% surcharge on accommodations). Paradoxically, Paris is emptier because Parisians themselves travel. Provençal lavender bloom (mid-June to late July) is a highlight of this time. Temperatures: South 28–35°C, Paris 20–28°C, Brittany 18–24°C.
🟢 Best Time: May/June and September/October
The absolute recommendation for most travelers:
- May/June: Perfect weather throughout the country, lavender begins to bloom, castles and sights without crowds. The sea becomes suitable for swimming on the Côte d'Azur (20–22°C). Paris shows its best side.
- September: The insider tip. Mediterranean at its warmest (23–25°C), grape harvest in Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Alsace. Crowds disappear, prices drop significantly. Still warm evenings for terrace dining.
- October: Autumn colors in the Loire Valley and the Vosges. Provence and Côte d'Azur still pleasantly warm. Truffle season begins in Périgord. Paris in autumn light is magical.
🔵 Low Season: November – March
The Côte d'Azur remains mild even in winter (10–15°C, lots of sun), ski resorts in the Alps and Pyrenees are in high season (December–April). Alsatian Christmas markets (late November to late December) are an experience. Paris in winter has its own charm: illuminated Champs-Élysées, fewer tourists in the museums.
