Best Travel Time & Climate

Indonesia lies on the equator and has a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Temperatures hardly fluctuate (25–33 °C year-round), but the rain makes the difference.

The Two Seasons

• Dry Season (May – September/October): The best travel time for most regions. Less rain, clearer visibility for divers, better road conditions on Flores and Sulawesi. July and August are peak season — book hotels in Labuan Bajo and Yogyakarta early.
• Rainy Season (November – March/April): Daily showers, usually in the afternoon for 1–3 hours, with sunshine in between. Roads on Flores and in Toraja can become impassable. Surfing on the Mentawai Islands is best in the rainy season (April–October is the actual surf season, the southwest monsoon brings the swells). Fewer tourists, cheaper prices.
