Indonesia for Every Type of Traveler
Indonesia caters to an astonishing range of travel styles — from backpackers to luxury travelers, from culture enthusiasts to extreme sports lovers:
🎒 Backpackers & Budget Travelers
Indonesia is one of the cheapest long-haul destinations in the world. On Java and Sumatra, you can travel for 200,000–400,000 IDR (12–24 €) per day including accommodation, food, and transport. Hostels and guesthouses from 80,000 IDR (5 €), Nasi Goreng on the street from 15,000 IDR (0.90 €). Flores and Sulawesi are slightly more expensive but still extremely affordable. Only Raja Ampat exceeds the backpacker budget.
🤿 Divers & Snorkelers
Indonesia is located in the Coral Triangle — the most biodiverse marine area on Earth. Raja Ampat is the holy grail, Bunaken (Sulawesi) offers world-class wall diving, Komodo has manta rays and drift dives, and the Togian Islands are an almost untouched paradise. PADI Open Water from 5,000,000 IDR (~300 €).
🌋 Adventurers & Volcano Fans
Indonesia has 127 active volcanoes — more than any other country. Bromo and Ijen on Java are the classics, Rinjani on Lombok is a multi-day challenge, Kerinci on Sumatra is the highest volcano in the country. Plus jungle treks in Bukit Lawang and the adventurous Trans-Flores Highway.
📸 Culture Travelers
From Borobudur's Buddhist splendor to Prambanan's Hindu elegance, to Toraja's animistic funeral rites and the batik workshops in Yogyakarta — Indonesia offers a cultural depth that rivals even India and China. 300 ethnic groups with their own languages, traditions, and art forms.
👨👩👧👦 Families
Java and Yogyakarta are well-suited for families: Borobudur and Prambanan also fascinate children, the people are extremely child-friendly, and the tourist infrastructure is solid. Komodo is an unforgettable adventure for older children (10+). For younger children, we recommend our Bali travel guide — the island is more family-friendly.
🏄 Surfers
The Mentawai Islands off Sumatra are among the top 5 surf destinations in the world: perfect barrels, warm water, hardly any crowds. G-Land (Grajagan) on Java's south coast is a legend in surf history. Krui (South Sumatra) and Sumbawa also offer world-class waves away from the masses.
