Capilano Suspension Bridge & Grouse Mountain★★
The Capilano Suspension Bridge is a 137-meter-long suspension bridge that hovers 70 meters above the Capilano River and the dense rainforest. Since 1889, it has spanned the gorge — the current construction dates from 1956 and supports up to 96 people at once. It sways. Quite a lot, actually. And that's exactly the point.
The park around the bridge offers more highlights: The Treetops Adventure — a network of seven suspension bridges between ancient Douglas firs at 30 meters high. The Cliffwalk — a dizzying path attached to the granite wall of the gorge, partly with a glass floor. And the totem poles and First Nations cultural center at the entrance.
Only 15 minutes away is Grouse Mountain — Vancouver's local mountain. The Skyride gondola (or the strenuous ascent via the "Grouse Grind" — 2,830 steps, about 1.5 hours) takes you to 1,231 meters. At the top: a 360-degree panorama over the city, the islands, and on clear days to Mount Baker. In winter: skiing with a view of the city lights — a magical experience.
💡 Tipp
The Capilano Bridge is not cheap at 62 CAD admission. The free alternative: the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge (20 minutes east), less spectacular but also over a gorge in the rainforest — and completely free.
Achtung
The Capilano Bridge is extremely crowded in summer (July/August) — wait times of 30–60 minutes at the entrance. Come at opening at 9:00 AM or after 4:00 PM. In December, there's the atmospheric "Canyon Lights" (light festival).
