Kirstenbosch — Botanical Garden
The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world — and the only one located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Cape Floristic Region). Situated on the eastern slope of Table Mountain, it covers 528 hectares, of which 36 hectares are cultivated garden.
Highlights
- Boomslang Tree Canopy Walkway — A 130-meter-long, curved walkway leads through the treetops of the arboretum at 12 meters high. Spectacular views of the garden and Table Mountain. The architectural marvel is photogenic from both below and above.
- Fynbos Section — Proteas, ericas, and restios — the unique flora of the Cape Floristic Region, the smallest and most species-rich of the six plant kingdoms in the world. Over 7,000 plant species, many found nowhere else on Earth.
- Sculpture Garden — Contemporary sculptures by South African artists scattered throughout the garden — art meets nature.
- Summer Concerts — From November to April, concerts are held every Sunday on the large lawn. Capetonians come with picnic baskets, wine, and blankets — one of the city's most beautiful traditions. Tickets: about 220 ZAR (11€).
Admission: 220 ZAR (11€) for adults. Open: September–March 8:00–19:00, April–August 8:00–18:00. Plan at least 3 hours — preferably an entire afternoon with a picnic.
