Table Mountain

The Table Mountain is not only Cape Town's landmark — it is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature and, at over 600 million years old, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Its flat summit at 1,085 meters dominates the skyline and is visible from almost every point in the city. On clear days, the view from the summit stretches across the entire Cape Peninsula, the City Bowl, Robben Island, and the endless blue of both oceans.

The Cableway

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is the most convenient way to the summit. The modern cabins rotate 360 degrees during the ride — every passenger gets the full panorama. The ride takes only 5 minutes, and at the top, a network of hiking trails, viewpoints, and a café awaits you.

  • Tickets: 440 ZAR (22€) return for adults, 220 ZAR (11€) for children. Online pre-booking is recommended — queues can exceed an hour in summer.
  • Opening hours: Depending on the season and weather. Summer: 8:00–20:30, Winter: 8:30–17:00. The cable car closes in strong winds — check the website or app in the morning.
  • Tip: Come for the "Last Ride" before sunset — the view over Cape Town in the evening light is unforgettable. Or even better: hike up and take the cable car down.

Hiking Trails on Table Mountain

There are over 350 hiking routes on Table Mountain and its foothills:

  • Platteklip Gorge — The most direct and popular ascent: about 2–3 hours, steep but well-marked. Starts at Table Mountain Road. No technical climbing, but basic fitness required.
  • India Venster — The most scenic ascent: about 2.5 hours, some climbing sections (hands needed), spectacular views of the City Bowl. Recommended only in dry weather.
  • Skeleton Gorge (from Kirstenbosch) — The most adventurous route: 3–4 hours through dense forest, over ladders, and along streams. Starts in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden.

Achtung

Table Mountain is no walk in the park! The weather can change within minutes — dense fog, strong winds, and temperature drops are always possible. Always bring warm clothing, water (at least 2 liters), sunscreen, and a charged phone. Never hike alone and inform someone about your route. Turn back immediately in fog — hikers get lost every year.
