Climbing the Pico do Fogo
Climbing the Pico do Fogo (2,829 m) is the ultimate adventure in Cape Verde — and a challenge that must be earned. The ascent leads over loose volcanic ash, lava rocks, and steep slopes to the crater rim, from where you can overlook the entire archipelago on clear days. The descent over the ash slope — sliding in giant leaps through the soft ground — is an adrenaline-filled experience reminiscent of sandboarding.
The Tour in Detail
- Starting Point: Chã das Caldeiras (approx. 1,700 m). All tours start at dawn (5:00–6:00 am) to reach the summit before the midday heat.
- Ascent: 3–5 hours over increasingly steep terrain. The first kilometers lead over relatively flat lava fields, then it gets steep: volcanic ash, where you slide back a bit with each step. The last 200 meters of elevation are the hardest part — steep slope, thin air, loose ground.
- Summit: The crater rim offers a breathtaking 360° view. On clear days, you can see Santiago, Brava, São Vicente, and the other islands. Inside the crater, fumaroles emit steam — a sign that the volcano is asleep but alive. The air is filled with the smell of sulfur.
- Descent: 1–2 hours — and the fun part. The steep ash slope is run/slid down in large leaps. Gaiters or long pants protect against ash-sand in the shoes. Some guides bring boards on which you can glide down the slope like on a snowboard.
- Total Duration: 5–7 hours
- Elevation Gain: approx. 1,130 m (ascent and descent)
- Difficulty: Demanding — no technical climbing, but fitness and surefootedness required. The altitude (almost 3,000 m) is noticeable.
What You Need
- Local Guide: Mandatory! Unaccompanied climbs are officially not allowed. A guide costs 40–70€ per group (up to 4 people). The guides are locals from Chã das Caldeiras who know the mountain inside and out.
- Equipment: Sturdy hiking boots (ankle-high), windbreaker (it's windy and cold at the summit: 0–5°C!), sun protection, 2–3 liters of water, snacks, headlamp (for the early start).
- Fitness: You don't need mountaineering experience, but a good basic fitness level. Those who hike or exercise regularly can manage it. Turn back if experiencing altitude sickness (headaches, nausea from 2,500 m).
Achtung
The Pico do Fogo is an active volcano. Climbing is prohibited during volcanic activity, bad weather, or strong winds. Check with local guides on the current situation. Conditions are most uncertain during the rainy season (August–October).
