São Vicente — Mindelo, the Music City

São Vicente is a small, mountainous island (227 km²) with a single city that is larger than anything else on the island combined: Mindelo. And Mindelo is — without exaggeration — one of the most charismatic small towns in the Atlantic. Here, Morna was born, here Cesária Évora grew up, here beats the cultural heart of Cape Verde.

Discovering Mindelo

Mindelo is located on the curved bay of Porto Grande, one of the most beautiful natural harbors in the Atlantic. The city has the charm of a little Lisbon in the tropics: colonial buildings with balconies and Azulejos (tiles), cobblestone streets, a lively fish market, street cafés under Jacaranda trees, and everywhere — truly everywhere — music.

The atmosphere in Mindelo is unique in Cape Verde: cosmopolitan, creative, bohemian. There are galleries, bookstores, theaters, and more live music bars per square meter than anywhere else in the country. In the evening, the city transforms: The bars on Rua de Lisboa and around Praça Amílcar Cabral fill up, musicians tune their guitars, and the sounds of Morna, Coladeira, Funaná, and Batuque waft through the alleys.

Cesária Évora — The Barefoot Diva

Cesária Évora (1941–2011) is the most famous Cape Verdean of all time. The singer from Mindelo became the "Queen of Morna" and made the melancholic Cape Verdean music world-famous. Her trademark: She always performed barefoot — as a sign of solidarity with the poor of her homeland. In Mindelo, her legacy is omnipresent: A bronze statue stands at the harbor, the Casa da Morna is dedicated to her life, and her songs are played night after night in the bars. Her voice — warm, smoky, full of Saudade — is the soundtrack of Cape Verde.

Carnival in Mindelo

Mindelo's Carnival (February/March) is the most spectacular in Cape Verde and one of the most authentic in all of Africa. Inspired by the Brazilian carnival, but with a Cape Verdean soul: Samba schools parade through the streets, elaborate costumes glitter in the sun, Batucadeiras drum, and the entire city dances for three days and nights. It is smaller than Rio, but that is precisely what makes it special: Here you dance with the people, not in front of them.

What Not to Miss in Mindelo

  • Mercado Municipal: The fish market at the harbor — in the morning, fishermen arrive with fresh tuna, wahoo, and lobsters. Also, fruits, vegetables, and spices in colorful abundance.
  • Torre de Belém: A scaled-down copy of the Lisbon landmark, built in 1921 at the harbor entrance. Quirky, but charming.
  • Monte Verde: The highest point of São Vicente (774 m) offers a spectacular panoramic view over Mindelo, Porto Grande, and the neighboring island Santo Antão. Accessible by taxi or hike (2 hours).
  • Praia da Laginha: Mindelo's city beach — a small, pretty beach right in the center with a view of the harbor. Perfect for an afternoon with a book and a beer.
  • Live Music: Every night, everywhere. Just stroll through the alleys and follow the sound. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
