Entry & Visa
Entering the Maldives is straightforward — the country thrives on tourism and makes it as easy as possible for visitors:
Visa
- Visa on Arrival: Germans, Austrians, and Swiss receive a free 30-day visa upon entry. No prior application needed.
- Extension: Extendable up to 90 days at the Immigration Department in Malé.
- Requirements: Passport with at least 6 months validity, return flight ticket, hotel reservation (or guesthouse booking confirmation).
Imani Declaration (Traveller Declaration)
Since 2023, all travelers must fill out a digital Traveller Declaration — online via imuga.immigration.gov.mv, up to 96 hours before arrival. Takes 5 minutes and is free. You need: passport data, flight number, accommodation address.
Customs Regulations
- Prohibited: Alcohol (confiscated at customs and returned upon departure), pork products, pornography, religious figures/idols, drugs (zero tolerance — death penalty possible!)
- Allowed: Sunscreen, medications (with prescription), electronic devices, cigarettes (up to 200 pieces)
Achtung
Drug possession is punished with extreme severity in the Maldives — from life imprisonment to the death penalty. Even small amounts of cannabis can lead to years of imprisonment. The Maldives is not a place to test boundaries.
