Diving & Snorkeling
The Maldives are one of the Top 5 diving destinations in the world — and snorkeling is almost as spectacular because many reefs start at a depth of 1–3 meters.
Diving Courses & Certification
Many resorts and local islands offer PADI diving courses directly on site:
| Course | Duration | Price (Resort) | Price (Local Island) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover Scuba (Introductory Dive) | Half day | 120–180 $ | 60–90 $ |
| PADI Open Water | 3–4 days | 600–900 $ | 350–500 $ |
| PADI Advanced Open Water | 2 days | 400–600 $ | 250–350 $ |
| Single Dive (Certified) | 1–2 hours | 80–120 $ | 50–70 $ |
| 10-Dive Package | Flexible | 600–900 $ | 350–550 $ |
| Night Dive | 1–2 hours | 100–150 $ | 60–90 $ |
💡 Tipp
Those who learn to dive on local islands save 40–50% compared to resort prices — with identical PADI certification and often the same dive sites. Dhigurah and Maafushi have several renowned dive schools with European and Maldivian instructors.
Diving Conditions & Tips
Best Diving Conditions
- Visibility: 20–40 meters (best visibility December–April)
- Water Temperature: 27–30 °C year-round — no wetsuit needed (3mm shorty optional)
- Drift Diving: The Maldives are famous for drift dives through atoll channels — the current gently carries you along the reef while sharks and rays pass by. Requires experience (Advanced + Drift Specialty recommended).
