Weather & Climate — When is the Best Time to Travel?
The Maldives are located on the equator (between 0° and 7° North), which means a tropical maritime climate with warm temperatures year-round. There are no seasons in the European sense, but two monsoon periods that significantly influence the travel experience.
Northeast & Southwest Monsoon in Detail
The Two Monsoon Seasons
| Monsoon | Dhivehi Name | Period | Weather | Sea | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast Monsoon (Dry Season) | Iruvai | December – April | Sunny, little rain, 75% humidity | Calm, visibility 30–40 m | Beach vacations, diving, honeymoons |
| Southwest Monsoon (Rainy Season) | Hulhangu | May – November | More rain, humid, 85% humidity | Wavy, visibility 15–25 m | Surfing, mantas, budget travel |

What Does "Rainy Season" Really Mean?
The rainy season in the Maldives is not continuous rain — this is the biggest misconception among European travelers. Typical are short, heavy showers of 20–60 minutes, often in the afternoon or at night, followed by sunshine. There are days with continuous rain, but they are the exception, not the rule. The rainy season even has advantages: fewer tourists, up to 40% cheaper resort prices, better manta and whale shark sightings, and spectacular cloud formations at sunset.
Special Factor: North vs. South
The northern atolls receive more rain during the southwest monsoon, while the southern atolls (Addu, Gaafu) are wetter during the northeast monsoon. Those who are flexible can optimize the weather by choosing the atoll: December–April in the north, May–August in the south — or vice versa, to maximize manta sightings during the rainy season.
💡 Tipp
The cheapest months for Maldives travel are May, June, September, and October — up to 40% below high season prices, with still warm water (27–29 °C) and good snorkeling conditions. The "sweet spot" is November: Start of the dry season, still off-season prices.
Surf Season & Wave Conditions
Although the Maldives are better known as a diving and snorkeling destination, they have established themselves as a first-class surfing destination in recent years. The waves are generated by the southwest monsoon and break on the outer reefs of the atolls — perfect, consistent waves that last from April to October.
The Best Surf Spots
| Spot | Atoll | Wave Type | Level | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chickens | North Malé | Left reef break, long and consistent | Intermediate+ | April–October |
| Sultans | North Malé | Right point break, powerful | Advanced | April–October |
| Pasta Point | North Malé | Left reef break, perfect waves | Intermediate+ | March–October |
| Cokes | North Malé | Right barrel break | Advanced | May–September |
| Yin Yang | South Malé | Left and right, versatile | All levels | April–October |
| Thanburudhoo (Ninjas) | North Malé | Fast left reef break | Advanced | May–September |
Thulusdhoo is the surf capital of the Maldives — a local island in the North Malé Atoll with several surf camps and guesthouses ($30–60/night). From here, Chickens and Cokes are reachable by Dhoni in 5 minutes. The surf scene is relaxed, the locals are hospitable, and fresh fish is served on the beach in the evenings. Coordinates: [4.3741, 73.6467].
Pasta Point is the most exclusive surf spot in the Maldives — located directly in front of the Cinnamon Dhonveli Resort and was long accessible only to hotel guests. The perfect, machine-like consistent left wave breaks over a shallow reef and is considered one of the most consistent surf breaks in the Indian Ocean. Access is now also possible for external surfers (for a fee via local boats), but the crowd remains manageable.
Surf Safaris by Dhoni: Several providers organize 7–14-day surf trips on traditional Dhonis or modern boats, cruising between the surf spots of the northern and central atolls. Prices: $1,500–3,000 for 7 nights, including meals and surf guide. Ideal for experienced surfers wanting to tick off multiple spots in one trip.
