The Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are the mighty backbone of Morocco — a mountain range stretching over 2,500 km from the Atlantic coast near Agadir to Tunisia, dividing the country into two fundamentally different worlds: the wet, green north and the dry, hot south. In Morocco, the Atlas is divided into three main chains, each with its own character.

The High Atlas (Haut Atlas) is the heart — with the Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) as the highest peak in North Africa and numerous four-thousanders. The north side, just an hour's drive from Marrakesh, is surprisingly green: terraced fields, walnut groves, apple trees, and rushing streams in valleys like the Ourika Valley or the Aït Bouguemez Valley ("Valley of the Happy"). In winter, snow falls down to 2,000 m, and the ski resort Oukaïmeden (2,600 m, only 80 km from Marrakesh) offers surreal images: Berbers on skis in front of snow-covered peaks while Marrakesh enjoys 20°C. The Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) on the road to Ouarzazate is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world.

The Middle Atlas (Moyen Atlas) between Fes and Marrakesh is surprisingly European: dense cedar forests, lakes, ski resorts, and the small town of Ifrane, known as "the Switzerland of Morocco" with its red roofs and manicured gardens. Here live the last Barbary macaques (Magots) of Africa — the only monkey species north of the Sahara. The cedar forests of Azrou are one of the best places to observe them.

The Anti-Atlas in the south is the oldest mountain range — its rocks are over 2 billion years old and among the geologically oldest formations on Earth. The landscape is barren, dramatic, and almost deserted: weathered granite peaks, deep gorges, isolated oases, and the last wild argan forests. The Anti-Atlas is Morocco's best-kept secret — hikers and geologists find an almost untouched wilderness here.

💡 Tipp

The best hiking season in the High Atlas is from June to September — in the higher altitudes, it is pleasantly cool while the cities are scorching. For the Toubkal, you don't need technical climbing equipment, but a registered mountain guide (mandatory, 300 MAD/day) and good hiking boots.
