Sahara & Desert Ecosystem

The Sahara begins south of the Atlas and covers the entire east and south of Morocco. Contrary to the image of an endless sand expanse, the Moroccan Sahara is predominantly stone desert (Hamada) and gravel desert (Reg) — the photogenic sand dunes (Erg) make up only a small part but are all the more spectacular.

The Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is Morocco's most famous dune field — a collection of golden-orange sand dunes stretching over 22 km in length and 5 km in width, reaching up to 150 m in height. The dunes constantly change their shape and color — golden in the morning, white at noon, deep red in the evening. The Erg Chigaga near M'hamid is more remote, wilder, and only accessible by off-road vehicle — the dunes are lower (up to 50 m), but the solitude is absolute. Here, you might not encounter another tourist for days.

The desert is not a lifeless place — it hosts an astonishingly diverse ecosystem. Desert foxes (Fennec), gazelles (Dorcas gazelle), scorpions, horned vipers, and numerous lizard species have adapted to the extreme conditions. After rare rains, the desert literally bursts into a sea of flowers — seeds that lay dormant in the sand for years germinate within days. The oases along the riverbeds (Oueds) — Draa Valley, Dadès Valley, Ziz Valley — are green ribbons amidst the stone desert: palm groves, gardens, clay castles, and centuries-old irrigation systems (Khettaras) tapping into groundwater.

The Todra Gorge and the Dadès Gorge are geological marvels on the edge of the Sahara: The Todra Gorge narrows to just 10 m in width between 300 m high vertical rock walls — a place of overwhelming drama. The Dadès Gorge offers bizarre rock formations known as "monkey fingers." Both gorges are located on the "Route of the Kasbahs" between Ouarzazate and Errachidia.

Achtung

Don't underestimate the Sahara! Even on organized tours: At least 3 liters of water per day, sunscreen with SPF 50+, light, long-sleeved clothing, and a cloth for mouth and nose (sandstorms!). In the winter months, night temperatures drop to 0°C — warm clothing is essential.
