Best Travel Time & Climate

Morocco has an enormous climatic range — from Mediterranean on the northern coast to Atlantic-moderate on the west coast to desert-hot in the south and alpine in the High Atlas. This means: There is no "one best travel time" for the whole country, but the shoulder season (March–May and September–November) works excellently almost everywhere.

🟢 Best Time: March–May and September–November

The absolute recommendation for most travelers:

  • March–May (Spring): Morocco in its most beautiful form. In the south, the almond trees bloom (February/March), temperatures are pleasant (20–28°C in Marrakech), the desert is not yet unbearably hot, and the High Atlas is snow-capped — perfect for photos. The fields in the Atlas are green, the rose harvest in the Dadès Valley (May) is a feast for the senses. In Fes and Chefchaouen, it is mild and sunny.
  • September–November (Autumn): The summer heat gives way to pleasant 22–30°C, tourist crowds have thinned, prices are moderate. October is ideal for the Sahara (warm during the day, cool at night, clear starry sky). The Atlantic coast retains the last summer warmth, and Marrakech is bearable again. The date harvest in the south (October) is an experience.

🔴 High Season: December–February (and Easter)

Winter is surprisingly high season, as many Europeans escape the cold. Marrakech has 18–22°C (perfect!), the desert is pleasant during the day (but icy cold at night: 0–5°C in December!), and the cities are lively but not crowded. Note: There is snow in the Atlas, some passes (Tizi n'Tichka) may be closed. Fes and Chefchaouen can be rainy and cool (8–15°C). Riad prices rise by 30–50% over Christmas/New Year.

🟡 Summer: June–August

In Marrakech, Fes, and the desert, it is unbearably hot — 40–48°C in the shade, the medinas become ovens. The Sahara is life-threatening with 50°C+. However: The Atlantic coast (Essaouira 20–25°C thanks to trade winds, Agadir 25–28°C) and the Atlas Mountains are perfect in summer. Essaouira in July/August is a secret tip — while Marrakech glows, you need a jacket there in the evening.

Regional Differences: Essaouira is 10–15°C cooler in summer than Marrakech (Atlantic trade winds!). Fes is colder and wetter in winter than Marrakech. The Sahara has extreme temperature fluctuations: 45°C+ during the day, below 5°C at night (winter). Chefchaouen in the Rif is rainier than the rest (November–March), but pleasant in summer. The High Atlas has snow from November to April above 2,500 m.

💡 Tipp

October is the perfect Morocco month: pleasant 25°C in Marrakech, ideal desert temperatures, clear starry skies, date harvest in the south, fewer tourists than in winter, and prices are still moderate. If you have only one month to choose — pick October!
