The Four Seasons

Spring (April–May): The Green Awakening

Spring is an underrated gem. Oleanders, bougainvillea, and citrus trees bloom on the coast, temperatures are a pleasant 18–25°C, and the beaches are still empty. The Bay of Kotor and the old towns can be explored without crowds. In the mountains, the snow melts, the rivers are in flood — perfect for rafting on the Tara. The only downside: The sea is still cool for swimming (16–19°C).

Summer (June–August): Beach and Heat

The peak season on the coast. Temperatures of 28–35°C, bright sunshine, and warm sea (22–26°C). July and August are the hottest and busiest months — Budva and Kotor can be very crowded. The mountains offer a welcome respite: On the Durmitor, it's a pleasant 18–25°C, perfect for hiking. Note: In midsummer, the Bay of Kotor can become oppressively humid (little wind in the sheltered bay).

Autumn (September–October): The Golden Time

For many, the best travel time of all. The sea is still warm (22–24°C in September), air temperatures are pleasant (22–28°C), but the crowds are gone. The grape harvest begins, the mountain forests turn colorful, and prices drop noticeably. October is ideal for hikes in the Durmitor and boat tours on Lake Skadar.

Winter (November–March): Skiing and Tranquility

The coast experiences mild but rainy winter weather (8–15°C). Kotor and Perast are atmospherically empty, many hotels and restaurants close from November to April. In the mountains, there's snow: The ski resort Kolašin and the Durmitor massif offer skiing and snowboarding opportunities at a fraction of the cost of alpine ski resorts (day pass: 15–25€). The Lovćen Pass is often closed in winter.

💡 Tipp

The perfect balance: September. Still warm enough for swimming (sea 22–24°C), fewer tourists than in July/August, lower prices, and the most beautiful light for photography. For hikers, June is ideal — long days, moderate temperatures, and mountain meadows in full bloom.
