Climate Overview
Although Montenegro is only 13,800 km² in size, there are extreme climate differences between the coast and the mountains — sometimes only 50 kilometers apart as the crow flies:
| Region | Summer (Jun–Aug) | Winter (Dec–Feb) | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coast (Budva, Kotor) | 25–35°C | 8–15°C | Mediterranean, 240+ sunny days/year |
| Bay of Kotor | 25–33°C | 5–12°C | Sheltered location, humid in midsummer |
| Lake Skadar | 28–38°C | 3–10°C | Hottest region, continental influence |
| Mountains (Durmitor) | 15–25°C | -5 to -15°C | Alpine, up to 5m snow, ski season Dec–Mar |
Precipitation: The region around Kotor and the Orjen Mountains is among the rainiest areas in Europe — Crkvice holds the European record with over 4,600 mm of annual precipitation! In summer, however, the coast is predominantly dry, with most rain falling from October to March.
Water Temperature: The Adriatic reaches 24–26°C in August and remains pleasantly warm above 20°C until October. From June to September, swimming is possible everywhere, and ambitious swimmers take to the water as early as May.
