Regions at a Glance
Montenegro can be divided into three major travel regions — each with a completely unique character:
Adriatic Coast & Bay of Kotor
For whom: Beach vacationers, cultural travelers, sailors, history enthusiasts
The Montenegrin coast offers everything over 293 kilometers: the spectacular Bay of Kotor with its Venetian towns, the glamorous resort of Budva, the fairytale peninsula of Sveti Stefan, and the authentic southern tip near Ulcinj with the longest sandy beach on the Adriatic. The season runs from May to October, the high summer gets busy — the off-season (May/June, September/October) is ideal.
Mountains & National Parks
For whom: Hikers, adventurers, nature lovers, rafting fans
The Montenegrin hinterland is wild, untouched, and spectacular. The Durmitor National Park (UNESCO) with the Tara Canyon, the Biogradska Gora primeval forest, and the Prokletije mountains on the Albanian border offer hiking, rafting, canyoning, and winter sports. Bears, wolves, and eagles still live here.
South & Lake Skadar
For whom: Peace seekers, bird watchers, culture enthusiasts
The old royal capital Cetinje, the expansive Lake Skadar with its unique birdlife, and the capital Podgorica as a surprisingly lively stopover. This region combines coast and mountains and shows the authentic Montenegro away from the tourist streams.
