Bagan Practicalities & Mount Popa

Three Places, One Bagan

Bagan consists of three localities, and where you stay influences your experience:

  • Nyaung-U: The bustling town in the north with budget accommodations, the Nyaung-U market (fantastic from 6 AM — fresh fruits, vegetables, longyis, thanaka), and the bus station. Most backpackers and budget travelers stay here. Atmosphere: lively local town.
  • Old Bagan: In the middle of the archaeological zone, among the temples. This is where the upscale hotels are located (Bagan Lodge, Aureum Palace, Bagan Hotel River View). The most atmospheric but most expensive option — stepping out of the hotel in the morning and standing directly among the pagodas.
  • New Bagan: Located to the south, more mid-range options and good restaurants. Quieter than Nyaung-U, less charm, but a solid base.

Entry & Rules

  • Zone Ticket: 25,000 MMK (about 8 EUR), valid for 5 days. Sold at the airport, bus station, or checkpoints. Keep the receipt — it is checked randomly.
  • Climbing Temples: Prohibited since 2019 (earthquake damage 2016 + UNESCO requirements). Use official viewpoints.
  • Clothing: Shoulders and knees covered in all temples. Remove shoes and socks! The sand can be scorching hot at midday.
  • E-Bike: The perfect means of transport. 5–8 EUR/day, no license required, silent and fast enough for the sandy paths between the temples. Battery lasts for a whole day. Bring a flashlight: many temples have dark interiors with hidden murals.

Mount Popa — Day Trip

50 km southeast of Bagan, Mount Popa — an extinct volcano — rises from the dry plain. On the rocky outcrop Taung Kalat sits a picturesque monastery, accessible via 737 steps — inhabited by monkeys that will literally steal anything not secured (sunglasses, water bottles, snacks, camera caps).

The place is sacred to the Nat spirit cult — the 37 official Nat spirits of Myanmar have their most important seat here. At the foot of the mountain are colorful Nat shrines with offerings and spirit figures. The panoramic view from the summit over the plain to the Irrawaddy is spectacular.

Getting There: Day trip from Bagan, about 25–40 USD by taxi (round trip, including waiting time). Cheaper by shared minivan (5–10 USD).

💡 Tipp

Rent an E-Bike (5–8 EUR/day) and explore the temples on your own. Most tourists focus on the large temples along the main road — head to the remote areas in the south and east, where you stand alone before centuries-old pagodas, and the only sound is the hum of cicadas.
