Sunrise & Balloon Ride

The Ultimate Bagan Experience

The sunrise or sunset over the temple fields of Bagan is one of the most unforgettable visual experiences Asia has to offer. When hundreds of pagodas emerge from the morning mist, the light shifts from golden yellow to pink to deep orange, and the red brick structures float like islands in a sea of mist, you understand why Bagan has attracted pilgrims for centuries and travelers from around the world for decades.

Where to Experience the Sunrise?

Since 2019, climbing the temples is strictly prohibited — the earthquake damage of 2016 made this necessary, and the UNESCO listing sealed the ban. Instead, there are official alternatives:

  • Nyaung Lattna Viewing Hill: The official viewpoint, well-attended (arrive early!), but with a wide view over the plain. Free access.
  • Shwesandaw Pagoda Area: Although the pagoda itself can no longer be climbed, the surrounding area offers good perspectives.
  • E-Bike Insider Tips: Head to the remote areas in the south or east and find your own viewpoint — a small elevation, a dirt road, a clearing. The best sunrises are experienced where you are alone.

Hot Air Balloon Over Bagan

The absolute ultimate Bagan experience: floating in a hot air balloon over the temple fields as the sun rises. 45 minutes of silence, 360-degree panorama, the temples below you, the Irrawaddy in the distance — a moment you will never forget.

  • Providers: Balloons over Bagan (the original provider), Oriental Ballooning
  • Price: 350–400 USD per person (including transfer, light breakfast, champagne toast after landing)
  • Season: November–March (depending on wind conditions)
  • Booking: Book months in advance! Especially December/January often sold out. Book directly through the providers' websites.
  • Procedure: Pick-up at 5:00 AM, ascent at sunrise, flight over the temple fields, landing after about 45 minutes

350 dollars is a lot of money — especially in a country where a lunch costs 1 euro. But the balloon ride over Bagan is one of those rare experiences where no one says afterward: "It wasn't worth it." On the contrary — it becomes the highlight of your entire Asia trip.

💡 Tipp

Get up for the sunrise at 5 AM, even if it hurts. In Bagan, there is no second chance for a first impression. Rent an E-Bike the night before and set off at dawn — the sandy paths between the temples in the first light, with mist and absolute peace, are an experience in themselves, even without the perfect viewpoint.
