Irrawaddy River Cruise

The Most Beautiful Boat Trip in Myanmar

The Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) is Myanmar's lifeline — 2,170 km long, it flows from the glaciers of the Himalayan foothills to the sprawling delta in the south, where it empties into the Bay of Bengal. For centuries, the river has been the country's most important transportation artery, and a journey on the Irrawaddy from Mandalay to Bagan (or vice versa) is among the most beautiful river journeys in Asia.

The Mandalay–Bagan route is about 300 kilometers long and passes through a landscape that has changed little over the centuries: golden pagodas on hills by the riverbank, fishermen in dugout canoes, water buffalo on the sandbanks, villages made of bamboo and teak. In the distance, the blue mountains of the Shan State. And then, at the end of the journey, the first appearance of Bagan's temples on the horizon.

Options

  • Government Ferry / Slow Boat: The cheapest and most authentic option — 10–12 hours downstream, starting at 15 USD for foreigners (deck class). Slow, simple, but an unforgettable experience: you sit on the upper deck among Burmese families, monks, and traders as river life passes by. Early start at 5:30 AM, arrival in the late afternoon.
  • Speedboats: 5–6 hours, about 30–45 USD. More comfortable and faster, but less atmospheric. Various providers, daily departures in the high season.
  • Luxury Cruises: Multi-day trips on historic riverboats with cabins, restaurant, pool, and shore excursions. The most well-known: Belmond Road to Mandalay, Anawrahta, and Sanctuary Ananda. 2–7 days, starting at 300 USD per night. A dream for pleasure travelers — gourmet cuisine, knowledgeable guides, and a pace that matches the river.

Practical Information

  • Best Time: October–March — enough water for all types of ships, pleasant weather. In the dry season (Jan–Apr), the water level can be so low that speedboats have to take detours.
  • Direction: Downstream (Mandalay → Bagan) is faster and cheaper than upstream. Arriving in Bagan at sunset, when the temples appear on the riverbank, is the perfect introduction.
  • Bring: Sun protection, hat, plenty of water, snacks (the Slow Boat offers simple food, but the selection is limited), camera with a full battery.

💡 Tipp

Take the Slow Boat from Mandalay to Bagan — it's one of the most beautiful experiences in all of Myanmar. Start early in the morning, bring provisions, a good book, and patience, and enjoy 10 hours of pure Myanmar on the water. Arriving in Bagan in the late afternoon, when the first golden light brushes the temples on the riverbank, is the perfect prelude.
