The Times Square is the most photographed place in the world — and a place that polarizes. Some love the sensory overload of millions of LEDs, neon signs, Broadway marquees, and crowds. Others find it unbearably loud and kitschy. No matter how you feel: You have to visit at least once — especially at night, when the wall of lights is so bright that there are no shadows.
Broadway Theater District
Around Times Square are over 40 Broadway theaters — the largest and most famous theater district in the world. A Broadway musical is a must-do in New York:
- Hamilton: Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop epic about America's founding fathers — the cultural event of the last decade. Richard Rodgers Theatre.
- The Lion King: On Broadway since 1997 — Julie Taymor's puppets and costumes are breathtaking. Minskoff Theatre.
- Wicked: The prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" — a mega-hit since 2003. Gershwin Theatre.
- Chicago: The longest-running revival on Broadway — jazz, murder, sex. Ambassador Theatre.
- MJ: The Musical: Michael Jackson's story, told through his music. Neil Simon Theatre.

Under the red stairs at Times Square (47th Street), the TKTS Booth sells last-minute tickets for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows at 20–50% discount. Daily from 3 PM (Matinee: from 10 AM). Waiting time: 30–60 minutes. The electronic board shows all available shows and discounts. Payment: Cash or card. 💡 Tipp
Times Square is most impressive after dark — the wall of lights is most intense at night. But: Don't spend too much time here — it's touristy, loud, and the restaurants are overpriced. Better to enjoy the sea of lights and then head to a side neighborhood (Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea) for dining.
