Amsterdam's food scene has dramatically evolved in recent years — moving away from the cliché of fries-and-croquettes cuisine to one of the most exciting culinary cities in Europe. Indonesian, Surinamese, and Turkish immigration has enriched the cuisine like in few other European cities.

Restaurants & Food Tips

• Indonesian Rijsttafel — The culinary heritage of the colonial era: 12–20 small dishes on a table. Try Kantjil & de Tijger (Spuistraat 291) or Blauw (Amstelveenseweg 158). Budget: €25–40/person.
• Surinamese Cuisine — Roti (flatbread with curry), Broodje Pom (sandwich with taro casserole), Bakabana (fried plantain). Roopram Roti (1e Van der Helststraat 65, De Pijp) is legendary. Budget: €8–15.
• Foodhallen — Amsterdam's chic food court in a former tram depot (Bellamyplein 51, Amsterdam West). 20+ stalls from Bao Buns to Dutch Bitterballen. Budget: €10–25.
• FEBO — The iconic vending machine snack bar: Insert coin, open hatch, take out croquette. Dutch fast food since 1941. A must-try.

Nightlife

Amsterdam has one of the best nightlife scenes in Europe — from cozy Bruin Cafés to cocktail bars to world-class clubs:

• Bruin Cafés — The soul of Amsterdam: Wood paneling, draft beer, conviviality. Café 't Smalle, Café de Dokter (smallest bar in the city), Proeflokaal Arendsnest (only Dutch beer!).
• Leidseplein & Rembrandtplein — The two major nightlife squares: Bars, clubs, live music. Touristy but lively.
• Clubs — Paradiso (legendary club in a former church), Melkweg (cultural center with club, cinema, theater), Shelter (underground techno under the A'DAM Tower). Amsterdam is one of the techno capitals of Europe.
• A'DAM Tower — The rooftop bar "Madam" with panoramic views over Amsterdam and the "Over the Edge" swing on the roof. Spectacular at sunset.
