City Walk: The Best in One Day

This walk takes 4–5 hours (without museum visits) through Amsterdam's highlights. Start: Dam Square. Ideal for the first day to get oriented.

Route: Dam Square → Jordaan → 9 Straatjes → Canal Belt

Follow this route for a perfect overview:

  1. Dam Square — Start at the central square with the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis), Nieuwe Kerk, and National Monument. The square is loud and crowded but historically significant. (30 min.)
  2. Through Kalverstraat to Begijnhof — Through the shopping street to the hidden oasis: The medieval Begijnhof with the oldest wooden facade in the city. Quiet in the midst of the hustle and bustle. (20 min.)
  3. Spui — Book market on Fridays, lovely cafés, the Lieverdje monument. (15 min.)
  4. Through the 9 Straatjes (De Negen Straatjes) — Nine tiny cross streets between Prinsengracht and Singel, filled with vintage shops, design boutiques, and cafés. Amsterdam's most charming shopping district. (30–45 min.)
  5. Anne Frank House — Exterior view (or visit if pre-booked). Continue along Prinsengracht to the north. (15 min.)
  6. Explore Jordaan — Stroll through Egelantiersgracht and Bloemgracht. Coffee at Café 't Smalle. (45 min.)
  7. Noordermarkt & Noorderkerk — If Saturday: Organic farmers' market. The church from 1623 is impressive. (20 min.)
  8. Along Brouwersgracht to Herengracht — Over the Golden Bend back towards the Museum Quarter or for dinner in De Pijp. (30 min.)
