City Walk: The Best in One Day
This walk takes 4–5 hours (without museum visits) through Amsterdam's highlights. Start: Dam Square. Ideal for the first day to get oriented.
Route: Dam Square → Jordaan → 9 Straatjes → Canal Belt
Follow this route for a perfect overview:
- Dam Square — Start at the central square with the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis), Nieuwe Kerk, and National Monument. The square is loud and crowded but historically significant. (30 min.)
- Through Kalverstraat to Begijnhof — Through the shopping street to the hidden oasis: The medieval Begijnhof with the oldest wooden facade in the city. Quiet in the midst of the hustle and bustle. (20 min.)
- Spui — Book market on Fridays, lovely cafés, the Lieverdje monument. (15 min.)
- Through the 9 Straatjes (De Negen Straatjes) — Nine tiny cross streets between Prinsengracht and Singel, filled with vintage shops, design boutiques, and cafés. Amsterdam's most charming shopping district. (30–45 min.)
- Anne Frank House — Exterior view (or visit if pre-booked). Continue along Prinsengracht to the north. (15 min.)
- Explore Jordaan — Stroll through Egelantiersgracht and Bloemgracht. Coffee at Café 't Smalle. (45 min.)
- Noordermarkt & Noorderkerk — If Saturday: Organic farmers' market. The church from 1623 is impressive. (20 min.)
- Along Brouwersgracht to Herengracht — Over the Golden Bend back towards the Museum Quarter or for dinner in De Pijp. (30 min.)
