Haarlem★★★

Haarlem is Amsterdam's underrated sister — only 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal, but with a character all its own. The city has everything Amsterdam has (canals, museums, restaurants, historic architecture) but without the crowds and at significantly lower prices. Many Amsterdam visitors discover Haarlem as an alternative for overnight stays — and then never want to leave.

Highlights

  • Grote Markt — One of the most beautiful squares in the Netherlands: The imposing Grote Kerk (St. Bavo) dominates the square, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and the Gothic town hall. Large weekly market on Saturdays.
  • Grote Kerk (St. Bavo) — The late Gothic church houses the famous Müller organ, played by both Mozart (at age 10!) and Handel. 5,068 pipes, a monumental sound. Organ concerts in summer.
  • Frans Hals Museum — The museum is dedicated to the Baroque master Frans Hals, who lived and died in Haarlem. His group portraits (militia pieces) are precursors to Rembrandt's Night Watch. Beautifully presented in a former old men's home.
  • Teylers Museum — The oldest museum in the Netherlands (founded in 1778), housed in an original cabinet of curiosities. Fossils, instruments, drawings (Michelangelo, Rembrandt) — a unique time travel experience.
  • Canals — The Spaarne riverbank and the small canals are delightful for strolling. Boat tours from the dock on the Spaarne (from €12).

Haarlem is also the gateway to the flower fields: The tulip fields between Haarlem and Leiden are accessible by bike (Bollenstreek Route).

💡 Tipp

For those who shy away from Amsterdam prices: Stay in Haarlem! The train connection is perfect (every 10 min., 15 min. travel time), hotels and restaurants are 30–50% cheaper, and Haarlem itself is worth a visit.
