Zaanse Schans★★
Zaanse Schans is a living open-air museum on the banks of the Zaan — only 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. Historic windmills, wooden houses, a cheese factory, a clog workshop, and a pewter figure caster provide a picture of Dutch life in the 17th and 18th centuries.
What to See
- Windmills — Six historic windmills are in operation: oil mill, paint mill, mustard mill, sawmill, and spice mill. You can go inside and watch the millers at work. Entry per mill: €5.50 (combo ticket: €17).
- Clog Maker (Klompenmaker) — Live demonstration: A wooden shoe is made from a block of wood in 5 minutes. You can buy original clogs (from €15). Free.
- Cheese Factory "Catharina Hoeve" — Live cheese making, followed by tasting. The shop has a huge selection of Gouda and Edam in all stages of maturity. Free.
- Albert Heijn Museum — The first Albert Heijn store (now the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands) opened in 1887 in Zaandam. The museum shows the original corner shop. Free.
Honestly: Zaanse Schans is touristy — on summer days, tour groups crowd the narrow paths. But the windmills are real, the craftsmen truly work, and the river landscape is beautiful. Tip: Come early in the morning (before 10 am) or late afternoon (after 4 pm), then you have the mills almost to yourself.
