Volendam & Marken★★
The former fishing villages of Volendam and Marken on the Markermeer (formerly Zuiderzee) are a window into traditional Dutch life. Located just 20 km north of Amsterdam, they are a popular half-day trip.
Volendam
Volendam's harbor is postcard-perfect: colorful wooden houses by the water, fishing boats, smoked eel shops, and souvenir shops. The Volendams Museum showcases the life of fishermen in the 19th century. A classic (and yes, a bit kitschy): getting photographed in traditional Volendam costume (cap and clogs).
Culinary: Fried eel (gerookte paling) is the specialty. Try it at the harbor — freshly smoked and buttery tender. Accompanied by a "biertje" with a view of the water.
Marken
The former island of Marken (connected to the mainland by a causeway since 1957) is more authentic than Volendam: green and black wooden houses on mounds (artificial hills for flood protection), a small lighthouse, and a remarkable tranquility. The Marker Museum shows the harsh life of fishermen and the strictly reformed culture of the island.
Marken Express: A small ferry connects Volendam and Marken across the Markermeer (30 min. crossing, €11 round trip). The ride across the open water is an experience — it can get quite bumpy in the wind!
