For Every Type of Traveler
Norway offers something for every traveler — here are the best recommendations:
For First-Time Visitors (10–14 days)
Oslo (2 days) → Bergen (2 days) → Fjords (Sognefjord/Geirangerfjord, 3–4 days) → Lofoten (3–4 days). This route covers the highlights and is doable with rental car, train, and ferry.
For Hikers
Preikestolen (Lysefjord), Trolltunga (Hardangerfjord), Besseggen (Jotunheimen), Romsdalseggen (Åndalsnes), Reinebringen (Lofoten). Norway has one of the best hiking networks in Europe, marked and maintained by the DNT (Den Norske Turistforening).
For Families
Southern Norway (Kristiansand with Dyreparken), Oslo (Vigeland Park, Bygdøy Museums, TusenFryd), Bergen (Fløibanen, Aquarium), Lofoten in summer (fishing, kayaking, whale watching). Norway's infrastructure is extremely family-friendly.
For Northern Lights Hunters
Tromsø (best infrastructure, September–March), Alta (Northern Lights Cathedral, dog sledding), Lofoten (northern lights over mountains and fjords — photographically unbeatable), Senja (quiet alternative).
For Road Trip Fans
The 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes (Nasjonale Turistveger) are masterpieces of road architecture: Trollstigen, Atlantic Road, Lofoten, Senja, Hardanger, Geiranger. Each route combines spectacular nature with architectural viewpoints.
For Budget Travelers
Camping and cabins (Allemannsretten = legal wild camping), self-catering from the supermarket, hiking (free!), ferries instead of flights, Vy trains with early booking discounts. Norway's most expensive expense is food — cooking for yourself saves a lot.
