Lake Wörth — Austria's Riviera★★★
The Lake Wörth is Carinthia's and Austria's most famous lake — 16.5 km long, up to 85 m deep, and up to 28°C warm in summer. Its turquoise blue color, the elegant villas of the Gründerzeit, and the vibrant nightlife have earned it the reputation of "Austria's Riviera." Since the 19th century, the lake has attracted nobility, artists, and summer vacationers — today it is a mosaic of glamour, family vacations, and sporting events.
The three main towns on the lake could hardly be more different: Velden in the west is chic and party-loving, Pörtschach in the middle romantic and quiet, Klagenfurt on the east shore the state capital with urban flair. In addition, there are the idyllic southern shore towns of Maria Wörth and Reifnitz.
The Lake Wörth Cycle Path (42 km circuit around the entire lake) is one of Austria's most popular cycling routes — flat, paved, fantastic views. E-bike rental in all major towns (from 35€/day).
Velden — Glamour by the Lake★★
Velden (8,800 inhabitants) is the most glamorous place on Lake Wörth and the setting of the legendary TV series "Ein Schloß am Wörthersee" (1990–93). The Schlosshotel Velden (Falkensteiner, from 280€/night) is the landmark — a white Renaissance complex directly on the west shore. Porsche and convertibles parade along the casino pier, and the bars along the lakeside promenade celebrate until late.
The Casino Velden (jackpot, roulette, poker) is one of Austria's most elegant casinos: Admission from 18 years, dress code smart casual, minimum bet from 2€. Right next to it are the best bars in town.
The bathing beaches in Velden usually charge admission (5–8€ for a beach bath with a sunbathing lawn). The public bathing spot at the west end (free) is the insider tip — less infrastructure, but more authentic and quieter.
In August, the Velden am Wörthersee Beach Volleyball Grand Slam takes place — one of the largest beach volleyball events in Europe, directly on the lakeshore. Free entry to the preliminary rounds.
💡 Tipp
In Velden, there are two worlds: The expensive lakeside promenade (cocktail 14–18€) and the authentic Velden away from the lake. The restaurant "Seewirt" (Klagenfurter Straße 26) serves excellent Carinthian cuisine at fair prices — Kasnudeln 14€, Reindling as dessert 6€. Locals prefer the evening sun on the west shore.
Pörtschach — Romance & Brahms★★
Pörtschach (2,900 inhabitants) is the most romantic place on Lake Wörth — a peninsula that stretches like a finger into the lake, with the famous Flower Promenade (600 m, over the water) and the magnificent Gründerzeit villas reflecting in the turquoise water. Johannes Brahms spent the summers of 1877–79 here and composed his 2nd Symphony — inspired by the view of the lake.
Pörtschach has less glamour than Velden, but more charm: Small boutique hotels instead of bed castles, sailboats instead of speedboats, sunsets instead of DJ sets. The Schlossberg (10-minute walk) offers a panoramic view over the entire lake.
The beach baths in Pörtschach are well-maintained and family-friendly: The Park Bath (8€ adults, 4€ children) has a diving tower, slide, and generous sunbathing lawns. The Werzer Beach Bath (10€) is more elegant with an infinity pool feel to the lake.
💡 Tipp
The miniature world "Minimundus" in Klagenfurt (15 min. drive) showcases 156 miniature models of famous buildings at a scale of 1:25 — perfect for families. Admission: 19€ adults, 11€ children. Open from April to October.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee★★
Klagenfurt (103,000 inhabitants) is Carinthia's capital and is only 4 km from Lake Wörth — a 15-minute bike ride to the beach. The old town surprises with Italian flair: Renaissance courtyards, pastel-colored facades, the Lindwurm Fountain (the city's landmark, 1593), and the New Square as a central meeting point.
The Lindwurm is Klagenfurt's heraldic animal — according to legend, the city was founded on the swamp where a dragon lived, which was slain by brave knights. The bronze sculpture on New Square is a masterpiece of the late Renaissance.
Worth visiting: The State Museum (8€, history of Carinthia from the Ice Age to today), the Cathedral (early Baroque stucco work), the Robert Musil Literature House (birthplace of the author of "The Man Without Qualities"), and the Europapark on the Lend Canal — a green oasis with mini-golf and boat rental.
The Klagenfurt Beach on Lake Wörth is one of the largest in Europe with 50,000 m²: Sandy beach, diving tower, beach volleyball courts, restaurants. Admission: 6.50€ adults, 2.50€ children.
💡 Tipp
Every Thursday and Saturday, a farmers' market takes place at the Benedictine Market — here you can find the best Carinthian Kasnudeln freshly prepared (6€ for 6 pieces), along with a glass of Uhudler juice and Carinthian Reindling. The most authentic culinary experience in the city.
