Skiing in Tyrol — Top 5 Areas

Tyrol has over 80 ski areas with more than 3,000 kilometers of slopes — making it the densest ski region in the world. The season runs from November to April, on glaciers until June. Here are our five best ski areas for different needs:

1. Ski Arlberg — The Largest & Most Legendary★★★

Tageskarte 76€, 6-Tage 395€

Ski Arlberg (St. Anton, Lech-Zürs, Warth-Schröcken, Stuben, St. Christoph) is with 305 kilometers of slopes the largest contiguous ski area in Austria. Snow reliability is legendary thanks to its location on the main Alpine ridge — an average of 7 meters of natural snow per season. The terrain is challenging and diverse: From the 10 km long Valluga descent to perfectly groomed carving slopes and the best freeride slopes in the Alps.

The Valluga (2,811 m) is the highest point: From here, the legendary descent to St. Anton (1,300 meters of vertical drop in one go). Lech-Zürs offers more luxury and more moderate slopes. Warth-Schröcken has the most snow in Europe.

Day pass: €76 (adults), €38 (children). 6-day: €395/€197.50. 88 lifts. Season: Late November–Late April.

2. Ischgl-Samnaun — Party & Slopes★★★

Tageskarte 72€, 6-Tage 370€

Ischgl-Samnaun (Silvretta Arena) is Tyrol's most glamorous ski resort, combining 239 kilometers of slopes with the Swiss duty-free area of Samnaun — ski across the border, buy duty-free schnapps, and ski back to Austria. The slopes are at 1,400–2,872 meters and are snow-sure until the end of April thanks to the altitude and 1,100 snow cannons.

Ischgl is famous for its nightlife: the après-ski scene in the Trofana Alm, Kuhstall, and Schatzi Bar is legendary. At the start and end of the season, international stars (Elton John, Robbie Williams, Ed Sheeran have performed here) play free concerts on the Idalp. The gastronomy is excellent — Ischgl has several gourmet huts on the mountain.

Day ticket: €72 (adults), €43 (children). 6-day: €370/€222. 45 lifts. Season: late November–early May.

💡 Tipp

Ischgl is expensive — expect to pay €150–300/night for a hotel, €15–25 for a hut lunch. Savings tip: stay in neighboring Galtür (10 min.) or See (20 min.) and take the free ski bus to Ischgl. Hotel prices there are 40–60% cheaper.

3. Sölden — Glacier & James Bond★★

Tageskarte 72€, 6-Tage 375€

Sölden in the Ötztal offers 144 kilometers of slopes and a special feature: Two glaciers (Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers) ensure snow reliability from October to May. On the Gaislachkogl (3,058 m) stands the ice Q — the gourmet restaurant that became world-famous as the setting for the James Bond film "Spectre" (2015). Next to it, the 007 Elements exhibition inside the mountain (entry €22) — one of the most unusual film exhibitions in the world.

Sölden's slopes are wide, perfectly groomed, and spread over three peaks (Gaislachkogl, Tiefenbachkogl, Giggijoch). The "BIG 3 Rally" connects all three three-thousanders in one day — a classic. In the town itself, the après-ski life is vibrant: The "Bierhimml" bar and "Fire & Ice" are the hotspots.

Day pass: €72 (adults), €36 (children). 6-day: €375/€187.50. 31 lifts. Season: Mid-October–Early May.

4. Stubai Glacier — Families & Beginners★★

Tageskarte 62,50€, 5-Tage 280€

The Stubai Glacier is Austria's largest glacier ski area and ideal for families: Manageable 35 kilometers of slopes, many blue and red slopes, childcare on the mountain (BIG Family Ski Camp, from 3 years) and the shortest access of all glacier ski areas (only 45 min. from Innsbruck).

The altitude (1,750–3,210 m) guarantees powder snow until June. The Schaufelspitze (3,333 m) is accessible by cable car and offers a panoramic view over the Stubai Alps. The Snowpark Stubai Zoo is one of the best snow parks in Europe — Olympic athletes also train here.

Day pass: €62.50 (adults), €31 (children). 5-day: €280/€140. Family card (2 adults + all children up to 15): approx. €160/day. 26 lifts. Season: Mid-October–Mid-June.

💡 Tipp

Every Wednesday (January–March), the Stubai Glacier hosts "Nightskiing by Moonlight" — skiing by moonlight with a hut evening and torchlit descent. Registration at the ticket office, surcharge €15. A magical experience!

5. Kitzbühel — Tradition & Glamour★★★

Tageskarte 72€, 6-Tage 382€

KitzSki connects 170 kilometers of slopes with the most charming old town of all Alpine ski resorts. The slopes are predominantly intermediate, perfectly groomed, and offer panoramic descents with views of the Wilder Kaiser. The famous Streif can be skied as a black run (outside of race week) — but only by very good skiers.

Kitzbühel's strength is its atmosphere: Morning carving on perfect slopes, lunch in one of the rustic huts (Hagstein, Seidlalm, Panoramaalm), afternoon strolling through the old town, and evening dining in one of the many gourmet restaurants. The mix of sport and lifestyle is unique.

Day pass: €72 (adults), €36 (children). 6-day: €382/€191. 57 lifts. Season: Late October–Mid-April.
