Best travel time & climate
Austria is a year-round destination — with two completely different main seasons: summer (hiking, lakes, culture) and winter (skiing, Advent, thermal baths).
☀️ Summer: June – September
The main season for most travelers. Temperatures in the valleys 25–32 °C, in the mountains a pleasant 15–22 °C. Lakes reach 20–27 °C. Alpine huts and cable cars are open, the festivals in Salzburg and Bregenz are running. July/August are the busiest and most expensive — school holidays throughout Central Europe.
Recommendation: June and September are ideal. Fewer tourists, mild temperatures, in September the cattle drives and grape harvest.
❄️ Winter: December – March
Austria is the ski nation of Europe: over 400 ski areas with 7,000+ kilometers of slopes. Season from early December to Easter, glaciers (Hintertux, Stubai, Kitzsteinhorn) year-round. December/January: Christmas markets in Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck. Snow reliability in the major ski areas from 1,500 m practically guaranteed.
High season skiing: Christmas to January 6, semester holidays (February). Cheaper weeks: early December, mid-January.
🌸 Spring & Autumn
April/May: Ideal for Vienna and city trips — blossom time, mild temperatures, few tourists. In the mountains, there is often still snow until May. Ski touring season!
October/November: Golden autumn in the Wachau (grape harvest), alpine autumn in Tyrol, thermal bath season in Styria. Many cable cars close from November.
