Overview of regions

Austria is small (83,879 km², about the size of Bavaria), but incredibly diverse. Six travel regions, each with its own character:

🏛️ Vienna

For whom: Culture lovers, gourmets, city travelers
The capital is an open-air museum: Hofburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Schönbrunn, Belvedere. Plus over 100 museums, the highest density of coffee houses in the world, and a wine tradition right in the city. Two to three days minimum, better four to five.

🎵 Salzburg & Salzburger Land

For whom: Culture fans, music lovers, active vacationers
The baroque city with the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress is compact and walkable. The surrounding area offers Grossglockner, Krimml Waterfalls (Europe's highest), Zell am See, and the ski region Ski amadé with 760 kilometers of slopes.

⛷️ Tyrol (Innsbruck, Kitzbühel, Arlberg)

For whom: Skiers, hikers, mountain enthusiasts
Tyrol is synonymous with Alpine vacation. Innsbruck combines city and mountain like no other place. Plus Kitzbühel (Hahnenkamm race), St. Anton am Arlberg (legendary après-ski), the Ötztal with its glacier road, and the Stubaital.

☀️ Carinthia & Lakes

For whom: Families, bathing enthusiasts, connoisseurs
Austria's sunniest region: 1,270 bathing lakes, including the warm Wörthersee, the deep Millstätter See, and the fjord-like Weißensee. Klagenfurt and Villach have an Italian flair, the Nockberge offer gentle hikes.

🏔️ Salzkammergut

For whom: Romantics, nature lovers, photographers
76 lakes between Salzburg and Styria, including the postcard motif Hallstatt (UNESCO). Emperor Franz Joseph made Bad Ischl his summer residence. The Schafbergbahn at Wolfgangsee, the Dachstein Skywalk, and the Gosauseen are highlights.

🧀 Vorarlberg & Bregenzerwald

For whom: Architecture enthusiasts, gourmets, individualists
Austria's smallest province (after Vienna) surprises with award-winning wooden architecture, 3 cheese routes through the Bregenzerwald, the Bregenz floating stage, and world-class ski areas like Lech-Zürs. Less touristy than Tyrol, but more authentic.
