Benagil Cave & Boat Tours★★★

Praia de Benagil, Lagoa, Algarve

The Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is the most photographed attraction in the Algarve — and one of the most spectacular natural formations in Europe. A giant sea cave made of golden sandstone, whose ceiling has partially collapsed, revealing a circular "eye" through which sunlight falls onto the small sandy beach inside. The result looks like a natural cathedral, with the sea forming the altar.

The cave is located on the coast between Lagoa and Carvoeiro and is only accessible from the water. There are three options: By boat tour (from €25, 1-2 hours, from Benagil beach or Portimão harbor — the boats go into the cave, but you can't disembark), by kayak or SUP (from €30 guided tour, 2 hours — you can land on the small beach inside the cave and disembark, the best experience) or swimming from Benagil beach (about 200 meters, only in calm seas and for experienced swimmers — the current can be treacherous).

The best time to visit is in the morning (10-12 AM), when sunlight falls directly through the ceiling opening and bathes the interior in golden light. In the afternoon, the cave is in shadow. In the high season (July/August), the cave is overcrowded — dozens of boats at once, hundreds of swimmers. Come in May, June, or September for a quieter experience.

The coast around Benagil offers even more: The entire stretch between Marinha and Benagil (about 5 km cliff walk, 1.5 hours) is one of the most beautiful coastal hikes in the Algarve. The Praia da Marinha — a beach framed by dramatic double arches of limestone — has been listed by UNESCO as one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. Access is via a steep staircase (200 steps) from the cliff edge.

For a more comprehensive experience, numerous providers offer coastal boat tours (from Portimão, Lagos, or Albufeira), which cover not only Benagil but the entire coast with its dozens of grottos, rock arches, and hidden coves. A 2-3 hour tour costs €35-50 and is worth every cent — especially the tours with swimming stops in secluded coves that are not accessible from land.

💡 Tipp

Kayak tours to the Benagil Cave are the most intense experience — you paddle along the cliffs, through small grottos, and land directly on the beach inside the cave. Book at least 2-3 days in advance, as spots are limited. Providers: Taruga Tours, Benagil Cave Tours. Don't forget swimming shoes and a waterproof phone case!
