Everything you need to know about Prague before you set off — from the highlights to the best travel time and budget planning. The Golden City on the Vltava awaits you.
Why Prague?
Prague is a city that captures you at first glance and never lets go. No other European capital has such a completely preserved historic old town — from the Middle Ages through Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque to Art Nouveau, all epochs stand side by side, as if time decided to simply stand still.
- Charles Bridge — Europe's most famous stone bridge, begun in 1357 and lined with 30 Baroque statues, connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town. At sunrise, when the mist hangs over the Vltava and the lanterns still glow, it is a place of surreal beauty.
- Prague Castle — The largest enclosed castle complex in the world (70,000 m²) has towered over the city since the 9th century. Inside: the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, the Golden Lane, and the President's residence. The view from here over the red roofs, the Vltava bridges, and the towers of the Old Town is Prague's postcard motif.
- The Astronomical Clock — Since 1410, the oldest still functioning astronomical clock in the world has been striking at the Old Town Hall. Every full hour, the twelve apostles move, Death rings the bell, and thousands of tourists gaze upwards in fascination. A spectacle for over 600 years.
- Beer for 2 Euros — The Czech Republic is the country with the highest beer consumption per capita worldwide, and Prague is its epicenter. Half a liter of Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen in a traditional pub: 40–60 crowns (1.60–2.40€). Cheaper than water. Seriously.
- Kafka & Literature — Franz Kafka was born here, lived, suffered, and wrote. His traces are everywhere: the birthplace at the Old Town Square, Café Louvre, the narrow alleys of Josefov. Prague was and is a literary capital — from Kafka to Hašek (The Good Soldier Švejk) to Kundera (The Unbearable Lightness of Being).
- The Golden Lane — The tiny, colorful houses in Prague Castle, where goldsmiths once worked and Kafka wrote. A fairytale street that looks like it's from a children's book — and yet is real.
- Art Nouveau & Cubism — Prague has the world's unique cubist buildings (nowhere else was cubism transferred to architecture) and breathtaking Art Nouveau facades that rival Brussels and Vienna. The Municipal House (Obecní dům) is a total work of art that leaves one speechless.
- Value for Money — Prague is one of the most affordable capitals in Europe. A complete lunch menu for 5€, a beer for under 2€, a hostel for 10€ — and for that, a city that aesthetically plays in the league of Paris and Vienna.
Prague is the city where Gothic towers, Baroque palaces, Art Nouveau cafés, and beer gardens form a symbiosis that exists nowhere else in the world. Those who walk through the alleys of the Old Town, stroll across Charles Bridge, and sit in a Pivnice (beer pub) in the evening understand why Prague is called the Golden City.

Overview of City Districts
Prague is divided into historic districts that stretch along the Vltava:
Old Town (Staré Město) & Josefov
For whom: First-time visitors, history fans, architecture lovers
The vibrant center with the Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, the Týn Church, and the Powder Tower. Josefov, the former Jewish quarter, preserves six synagogues and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.
Prague Castle & Hradčany
For whom: Culture, history, panorama
The largest enclosed castle complex in the world with St. Vitus Cathedral, the Golden Lane, and the Old Royal Palace. The surrounding Hradčany is the aristocratic district with palaces and gardens.
Lesser Town (Malá Strana)
For whom: Romantics, peace seekers, connoisseurs
The Baroque jewel at the foot of the castle: cobblestone streets, palace gardens, the Church of St. Nicholas, and the Lennon Wall. Prague's most romantic district — and surprisingly quiet away from the crowds.
New Town (Nové Město) & Vinohrady
For whom: Night owls, foodies, locals
The New Town (founded by Charles IV in the 14th century — so it's not that new) includes Wenceslas Square and the National Opera. Vinohrady to the southeast is Prague's trendy residential area with the best restaurants, craft beer bars, and a local flair away from tourism.
