Health & Safety
Santorini is a very safe travel destination — the biggest risks are sunburn, dehydration, and quad accidents. A few important points:
Drinking Water
The tap water on Santorini is desalinated seawater and not suitable for drinking — it tastes salty and chlorinated. Always buy bottled water (1.5l from €0.50 in the supermarket). In restaurants, bottled water is automatically served (€0.50–1). Drink at least 2–3 liters per day, especially in summer.
Sun & Heat
The UV radiation on Santorini in summer is extreme (UV index 9–11). Sunscreen SPF 50, hat, and sunglasses are mandatory. The caldera hike Fira–Oia has little shade — start early in the morning. The white houses reflect the sunlight additionally — you can get color even in the shade. Protect children especially.
Safety
- Quad/ATV Accidents: Unfortunately common — Santorini has narrow roads, steep curves, and heavy traffic in summer. Always wear a helmet, drive carefully, bring experience.
- Cruise Day-Trippers: On days with large cruise ships (almost daily in summer), Oia and Fira become extremely crowded. Pickpocketing can occur — usual caution.
- Cliffs: The caldera cliffs are partially unsecured — do not go too close to the edge for selfies and photos. Unfortunately, accidents occur every year.
- Seismic Activity: Santorini is an active volcano. The risk of an eruption is extremely low, but small earthquakes do occur. In the unlikely event: Follow the instructions of local authorities.
