Choosing the Right Accommodation

The choice of accommodation is the most important decision on Santorini — it determines your budget, your experience, and your logistics. The island has three fundamentally different accommodation zones:

Caldera Hotels (Oia, Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli)

The Santorini experience: Cave hotels carved into the rock, with white walls, blue accents, and a terrace or infinity pool over the caldera. The view of the volcano and the sunset directly from your terrace is indescribable. Price: Mid-range from €150/night (Fira, Firostefani), premium from €300 (Oia), luxury from €500. In the high season (July/August), prices double. Insider tip: Imerovigli and Firostefani offer almost the same caldera view as Oia — for 30–50% less.

East Side (Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Karterados)

Close to the beach, affordable, relaxed. Studios and apartments from €30–60/night, hotels from €60–100. No caldera view, but black sand beaches, beach bars, and a laid-back atmosphere. Perfect for budget travelers, families, and anyone who wants to be at the beach during the day and at the caldera by bus or scooter in the evening.

Villages (Pyrgos, Megalochori, Emporio)

Authentic, quiet, central. Small hotels and apartments in traditional villages, usually with good value for money (€50–120). Ideal for travelers who want to experience Santorini's village charm and explore the whole island from a central position. Car or scooter recommended.
