Djurgården — Museum Island★★★

Insel Djurgården, Stockholm
Museen: meist 10:00–17:00 (Sommer länger). Parks: immer zugänglich.
Einzelmuseen: 130–250 SEK (11–22 €). Viele Grünflächen kostenlos.

Djurgården is Stockholm's green oasis and museum mile in one — an island that was once a royal hunting ground and is now Stockholm's most popular excursion destination. In addition to the Vasa Museum, ABBA The Museum, and Skansen, the island hosts other highlights:

★★ Nordiska Museet

Sweden's cultural history since the 16th century — fashion, furniture, table culture, Sami artifacts, children's toys from 500 years. The Renaissance-style building (by Isak Gustaf Clason, 1907) is impressive in itself — the huge Gustav Vasa statue in the entrance hall dominates the space. Temporary exhibitions on fashion, design, and everyday culture are consistently excellent.

Admission: 150 SEK (13 €), under 18 free. Daily 10:00–17:00 (Wed until 20:00).

★★ Junibacken

Astrid Lindgren's fairy tale world — a magical journey through the stories of Pippi Longstocking, Michel, Ronja, and the Brothers Lionheart. The highlights: A train ride through Astrid Lindgren's stories (the "Sagotåget" floats over miniaturized scenes — Pippi's Villa Villekulla, Michel's carpenter's workshop, the robber mountains), a walk-in Pippi Longstocking house for climbing, and one of the best children's bookstores in Scandinavia. Perfect for families with children aged 2–10 years.

Admission: 189 SEK (16 €), under 2 free. Daily 10:00–17:00.

★★ Gröna Lund

Stockholm's amusement park since 1883 — right by the water with a view of the Stockholm skyline. The park is compact but diverse with over 30 rides: The Ikaros roller coaster (free-fall tower with 90 meters), Twister (looping roller coaster over the water), and the historic Jetline provide thrills. What makes Gröna Lund special: In summer, open-air concerts by international top stars take place here — the stage by the water has hosted acts like Rihanna, The Killers, and Robyn. Admission to the park only, rides extra or with an Unlimited wristband.

Admission: 130 SEK (11 €). Unlimited wristband: 420 SEK (37 €). April–September.

★★ Rosendals Trädgård

A biodynamic garden with greenhouses, café, and bakery — hidden behind Djurgården's oaks. The café (in a 19th-century greenhouse) serves organic cakes, salads, and sandwiches with ingredients directly from the garden. The apple pie slice with a view of the orchards is legendary — many Stockholmers consider it the best apple pie in the city (55 SEK). In summer, you can pick flowers and vegetables yourself and buy them in the farm shop. A place of relaxation in the middle of the city.

★ Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

The villa and art collection of "Painter Prince" Eugen (1865–1947) — nestled in a beautiful sculpture garden by the water. Temporary exhibitions of contemporary Swedish art. Especially beautiful in autumn with foliage colors.

Djurgården is accessible by ferry from Slussen or Nybroplan (10 minutes, 55 SEK), by tram (line 7 from Sergels Torg — the historic tram rattles nostalgically through the city), or on foot over the Djurgårdsbron. In summer, you can rent bikes and kayaks on the island.

💡 Tipp

A full day on Djurgården: Morning at the Vasa Museum (2 hours), then ABBA Museum or Nordiska Museet, lunch at Rosendals Trädgård (organic café in a greenhouse — arrive before 12 pm, otherwise long lines), afternoon at Skansen or Gröna Lund. The ferry from Slussen is the most beautiful way to the island — 10-minute mini-cruise included.
