Eating & Drinking in Stockholm
Stockholm's gastro scene is one of the most exciting in Europe. The city boasts over 15 Michelin-starred restaurants, a thriving street food scene, and a coffee culture that ranks among the world's best. Everything revolves around New Nordic Cuisine — local, seasonal ingredients, minimally and elegantly presented.
Try Typical Swedish Dishes
- Köttbullar: Swedish meatballs with cream sauce, lingonberries, and mashed potatoes — yes, they exist outside of IKEA, and in Stockholm, they are significantly better. The difference: Real Swedish Köttbullar are made from a mix of beef and pork, seasoned with allspice and nutmeg, and the sauce is made with roast stock and cream — not powder.
- Toast Skagen: Toasted bread with shrimp, crème fraîche, dill, and trout caviar — Stockholm's most popular starter, named after the Danish fishing village of Skagen.
- Räksmörgås: Open shrimp sandwich — a masterpiece of North Sea shrimp, egg, dill, and mayonnaise. Best enjoyed at Östermalms Saluhall.
- Kanelbulle: Cinnamon bun — perfect for Fika. Best at Fabrique, Mr Cake, or Tössebageriet.
- Semla: Cardamom bun with marzipan and cream — traditionally before Lent (February/March), but now available almost year-round. The best Semlor in Stockholm can be found at Bröd & Salt (Södermalm) and Vete-Katten (Norrmalm, since 1928).

Coffee (Fika)
Stockholm is one of the coffee capitals of the world. The third-wave scene is strong:
- Drop Coffee (Wollmar Yxkullsgatan 10, Södermalm) — Multiple Nordic Barista Champion, minimalist roastery with outstanding single-origin coffees. For true coffee nerds.
- Johan & Nyström (Swedenborgsgatan 7, Södermalm) — Roastery and café in an old warehouse. The Flat White is one of the best in town.
- Fabrique (various locations) — The perfect Fika: coffee + perhaps Stockholm's best Kanelbulle. The branch in Vasastan is the original.
- Vete-Katten (Kungsgatan 55, Norrmalm) — Traditional patisserie café since 1928, three floors full of Swedish pastries: Prinsesstårta, Semla, Chokladboll. Time travel included.
- Mellqvist (Rörstrandsgatan 4, Vasastan) — Söder institution featured in the Stieg Larsson novels: Mikael Blomkvist drinks his coffee here. Simple, good, authentic.
💡 Tipp
The "Dagens lunch" (daily special) is the best deal in Stockholm: Main course + salad + bread + coffee for 130–180 SEK (11–16 €), served weekdays 11:00–14:00 in most restaurants. In the evening, you often pay double for the same dish. On Fridays and Saturdays, a table reservation in popular restaurants like Pelikan, Sturehof, or Ekstedt is almost a must — you often can't get a spot spontaneously.
