Aegadian Islands — Caribbean off Trapani
The Isole Egadi (Aegadian Islands) are an archipelago of three islands off the west coast of Sicily — and a well-kept secret. While the Aeolian Islands in the east are long established on every Sicily itinerary, the Aegadian Islands are quieter, cheaper, and no less beautiful. Since 1991, the area has been the largest marine protected area in Europe, ensuring crystal-clear waters and a rich underwater world.
Favignana is the largest and best-known island (15 km²) — perfect for a day trip or 2–3 days. Its shape resembles a butterfly, and the bays are breathtaking: Cala Rossa (a former tuff quarry filled with turquoise seawater — one of the most spectacular bathing spots in the Mediterranean), Cala Azzurra (sandy beach with shallow, crystal-clear water), and Bue Marino (a cave bay named after the monk seal). The island is perfect for exploring by bicycle (rent in town, €5–10/day) — it's flat enough, and the distances are short. The Ex Stabilimento Florio (former tuna factory, now museum) documents the centuries-old tradition of the Mattanza — the ritual tuna fishing that was practiced until 2007.
Levanzo is the smallest island (5.6 km²) and a dream for those seeking tranquility: a single small harbor, a dozen white houses, no cars, crystal-clear water, and absolute silence. The Grotta del Genovese houses prehistoric cave paintings and engravings (10,000–5,000 BC) — depictions of animals (deer, tuna) and human figures that are among the most significant cave artworks in the Mediterranean. Access is only possible via guided tour.
Marettimo, the westernmost and wildest island, is a paradise for hikers and divers: rugged cliffs, hidden sea caves (accessible by boat), hiking trails over the mountains (686 m), and the clearest water of the entire archipelago. There are no cars, no hotels (only a few guesthouses), and in the evenings, fishermen and visitors sit together at the harbor. Marettimo is the place where the world ends.
💡 Tipp
You can reach Favignana by hydrofoil from Trapani in just 20 minutes (from €12 per person, several times daily). Favignana is enough for a day trip — cycle around the bays, swim in Cala Rossa, have lunch in town, and visit Cala Azzurra in the afternoon. For Levanzo and Marettimo: plan at least 1–2 nights.
