Marsala — Wine and History

Marsala is world-famous for its namesake fortified wine — but the city at Sicily's western tip offers much more than wine tastings. Founded by the Carthaginians (Lilybaeum, 397 BC) as a fortress against the Greeks, Marsala was one of the most powerful ports in the western Mediterranean. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed here with his famous "Thousand" (I Mille) to liberate Sicily from Bourbon rule — a key moment in Italian unification.

The old town behind the city walls is a pleasant area: baroque churches, the elegant Via XI Maggio as a promenade, the Duomo (Cathedral, 17th century), and the Archaeological Park with the remains of Lilybaeum, including a Phoenician shipwreck (3rd century BC) in the Museo Lilibeo — one of the few preserved Punic warships worldwide.

The Marsala wine owes its global success to the English merchant John Woodhouse, who discovered in 1796 that the local wine, fortified with alcohol, could survive the sea journey to England — and was in high demand in London. Today, Marsala comes in varieties from dry (Secco) to semi-dry (Semisecco) to sweet (Dolce), from simple to noble (Vergine Stravecchio, aged 10+ years). The major wineries offer tours with tastings:

  • Florio — The most famous winery (since 1833), monumental wine cellar by the sea, tour + tasting from €15.
  • Pellegrino — Family business since 1880, excellent quality, also dry wines.
  • Donnafugata — Modern winery with excellent DOC wines (not just Marsala), stylish tasting in the old town.

Off the coast of Marsala lies the Laguna dello Stagnone — Sicily's largest lagoon area with shallow, warm water, particularly popular with kitesurfers. The tiny island Mozia (Mothia) in the lagoon is home to one of the most important Phoenician archaeological sites in the Mediterranean — featuring the famous Giovinetto di Mozia (Youth of Mozia), a marble statue from the 5th century BC of enigmatic beauty.
