Asian Elephants

Sri Lanka has the highest elephant density in Asia — an estimated 6,000–7,000 wild elephants live on the island. The annual Gathering in Minneriya (July–October), where up to 300 elephants gather at a reservoir, is one of Asia's greatest natural spectacles.

The best parks for elephants:

  • Udawalawe: Sighting rate nearly 100% — the safest bet
  • Minneriya/Kaudulla: The legendary Gathering (Jul–Oct)
  • Yala: Large herds, but the park is primarily known for leopards
  • Wasgamuwa: Remote and little visited, but excellent

Achtung

DO NOT visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage — it is a commercial tourist attraction, not a genuine rescue center. The elephants are kept on chains, paraded for tourists during bathing and feeding, and sometimes rented out for festivals. The Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe conducts genuine conservation work.
