Coral Reefs & Marine Life
Sri Lanka is surrounded by coral reefs that host an astonishing underwater world. Unfortunately, coral bleaching in 2016 and dynamite fishing practices have damaged many reefs — but some remain intact and fascinating.
The best snorkeling and diving spots
- Pigeon Island (Trincomalee): The best snorkeling in Sri Lanka — blacktip reef sharks, turtles, colorful corals. National park, entrance 2,500 LKR.
- Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary: Protected reef right on the beach with turtles and colorful fish. Glass-bottom boats for non-swimmers.
- Bar Reef (Kalpitiya): Sri Lanka's largest reef, 30 km long. Excellent diving.
- Wreck Diving: The SS Rangoon off Galle and the Conch Wreck near Batticaloa are popular dive sites.
