Rainforests & Endemic Species

Sri Lanka is home to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve — the island's last contiguous lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On just 189 square kilometers, there are more endemic species than almost anywhere else in the world.

Sinharaja Rainforest

  • Endemism: 50% of trees, 50% of butterflies, and 26 of Sri Lanka's 29 endemic bird species live here
  • Highlights: Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Purple-faced Langur, Giant Squirrel, Green Pit Viper
  • Practical: Guide is mandatory (2,000–4,000 LKR), entrance 1,500 LKR. Best accessed from Deniyaya or Ratnapura.
  • Climate: 3,000–5,000 mm of rain per year — bring rain gear and leech socks!

Knuckles Range

The second UNESCO-protected forest area in Sri Lanka — montane cloud forest over 1,500 meters with its own fascinating ecology (see Highlands chapter).

💡 Tipp

In the Sinharaja Rainforest, leeches are ubiquitous — wear long pants, tuck socks over the pant legs, and use leech repellent (tobacco water or salt). Guides always carry salt. The leeches are harmless, but knowing this makes the experience significantly more pleasant.
