Malaria & Health in Kruger

The Kruger National Park and the surrounding Lowveld areas are in a malaria risk zone. The risk is highest during the rainy season (October–April) and significantly lower in the dry season (May–September), but never zero.

Recommendations

  • Prophylaxis: Tropical medicine consultation BEFORE the trip! Commonly prescribed: Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil) or Doxycycline. No self-medication!
  • Mosquito protection: DEET-containing repellent (at least 30%, better 50%). Long clothing in the evening. Mosquito net (available in most accommodations).
  • Risk assessment: The risk is statistically low, especially in the dry season. Many doctors recommend no prophylaxis for June–August, just consistent mosquito protection. Decide with your doctor!
  • Symptoms: Fever, chills, headache, body aches 7–30 days after infection. If you have a fever after visiting Kruger, go to a doctor IMMEDIATELY and mention malaria!

Achtung

Malaria is a serious illness. Please consult a tropical medicine specialist BEFORE the trip. The risk is low in the dry season (May–September), but mosquito protection is still mandatory.
