Self-Drive Safari
Kruger is one of the few African parks where you can go on a self-drive safari in a rental car. This makes it unbeatable in terms of cost compared to East African safaris.
Basic Rules
- Speed: Max. 50 km/h on paved roads, 40 km/h on gravel roads. Slower = more animals!
- Stay in the car! Outside the rest camps, you must NOT leave the vehicle (except at designated picnic spots). Not even for a photo. Not even "just for a moment".
- Gate times: You must be in the rest camp before sunset. The gates open/close depending on the season (approx. 5:30–18:30 in summer, 6:00–17:30 in winter).
- Waterholes: The best sightings happen at waterholes and river crossings. Turn off the engine, wait, observe.
- Apps: "Latest Sightings" shows in real-time where other visitors have spotted animals. Game changer!
Vehicle Choice
A normal rental car (no 4x4 needed!) is sufficient for the main roads. For the unpaved side roads (S-Roads), an SUV or elevated vehicle is recommended — sightings are often better there because of less traffic. A Toyota Fortuner or similar is ideal.
Best Tactics
- Start early in the morning (gate opening) — animals are most active in the first 2–3 hours
- Wait at waterholes — patience is rewarded. 30 minutes is often enough
- Drive slowly — leopards often lie in the bushes right next to the road
- Pay attention to other cars — where cars are gathering, something big is usually happening
- Midday break in the camp — most animals rest between 11 and 15 o'clock. Pool, coffee, siesta.
- Go out again in the afternoon — the last hour before gate closure is golden
💡 Tipp
The S-Roads (unpaved side roads) are worth their weight in gold! Here, 90% fewer cars drive, and the chance of seeing leopards, wild dogs, and rare antelopes is significantly higher. S28, S36, S100, and S114 are the best.
