Napa Valley & Sonoma — California's Wine Country★★

Napa Valley, Kalifornien (1 Stunde nördlich von San Francisco)
Verkostungen: $20-100+ pro Weingut. Touren ab SF: $100-200/Person

Only an hour's drive north of San Francisco lies one of the most famous wine regions in the world. The Napa Valley and the neighboring Sonoma County produce wines that regularly compete with the best from France and Italy — especially since the "Judgment of Paris" in 1976, when Californian wines beat French Grand Crus in a blind tasting and changed the wine world forever.

Napa Valley is the more glamorous of the two: a 50 km long, narrow valley floor with over 400 wineries, many of which look like Tuscan villas or modernist art galleries. The most famous: Robert Mondavi (pioneer of Californian wine, architecturally impressive winery, tastings from $30), Opus One (the luxury winery, founded as a joint venture by Mondavi and Baron Rothschild, tastings $100+), Domaine Chandon (sparkling wine at champagne level, beautiful terrace). The main towns St. Helena and Yountville (with the three-star restaurant The French Laundry by Thomas Keller — book months in advance, menu $350+) are charming and walkable.

Sonoma is more rustic, less touristy, and often cheaper. The wineries are family-run, the atmosphere relaxed, the tastings more personal. The Sonoma Plaza (the largest town square in California) is a perfect starting point — surrounded by restaurants, cheese shops, and tasting rooms. Particularly recommended: Buena Vista Winery (oldest commercial winery in California, founded in 1857), Benziger Family Winery (biodynamic viticulture, excellent tram tour through the vineyards, $30).

💡 Tipp

Don't drive yourself if you want to seriously taste! Wine tours from San Francisco ($100-200/person, including transport and 3-4 wineries) are the safest option. Many wineries require reservations — especially on weekends. Sonoma is much more relaxed and cheaper than Napa during the week. The best time: September/October (harvest season, "Crush") — the air smells of ripe grapes, and the vineyards glow golden.

Achtung

Drinking and driving: In California, the limit is 0.8 per mille (strictly controlled). Alcohol adds up quickly during wine tastings — after 4-5 wineries, you're definitely over. Plan a driver (designated driver) or book a tour.
