American Language Guide

Even though most Germans speak good English, American English has its peculiarities. Here are the most important differences and practical phrases for everyday life.

American vs. British

In school, most Germans learn British English. In everyday American life, there are some important differences:

Small Talk & Politeness

Americans are generally more open and talkative than Germans. "How are you?" is not a real question — the expected answer is "Good, thanks! And you?"

Important: In the USA, you do NOT just sit down. You wait at the entrance for the host/hostess to lead you to the table ("Please wait to be seated").

Clothing sizes: US sizes differ! Women: US 6 = EU 36, US 8 = EU 38. Men's shirts: S/M/L/XL (same). Shoes: Men's US 9 = EU 42, Women's US 7 = EU 38.
