Halong Bay
The Halong Bay (Vịnh Hạ Long — "Bay of the Descending Dragon") is Vietnam's most famous natural wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Nearly 2,000 limestone rocks and islands rise from the emerald green sea — a landscape like a Chinese ink painting.
The Myth
According to legend, the Jade Emperor sent a dragon to protect Vietnam from invaders. The dragon spat jewels into the sea, which became rocks and destroyed the enemy fleet. Then the dragon descended into the water — Hạ Long, "the descending dragon".

Halong vs. Lan Ha vs. Bái Tử Long
The classic Halong Bay is overcrowded. Hundreds of boats at the same caves. The alternatives:
- Lan Ha Bay: South of Cat Ba, fewer boats, better swimming water, kayaking. From Hai Phong (via Cat Ba) or combined with Halong.
- Bái Tử Long Bay: Northeast, even quieter, less developed. For individualists.
Practical Information
Getting there: 170 km from Hanoi (3.5h by car/bus). Most tours include transfer. Alternatively: Seaplane from Hanoi (45 Min., from 100 USD) — spectacular!
Best time: October–December (clear views, little rain). March–May also good. July–August hot and hazy. Typhoon season (Aug–Oct) can cause tours to be canceled.
💡 Tipp
Book a tour to Lan Ha Bay instead of the classic Halong route. Same landscape, half as many tourists, twice as good swimming water. Cat Ba Island is an adventure in itself.
