Gothic Cathedrals & Crusader Castles

The Frankish Lusignan period (1192–1489) left an astonishing density of Gothic architecture on Cyprus — found nowhere else in the eastern Mediterranean:

  • Selimiye Mosque (Nicosia): Former St. Sophia Cathedral, coronation church of the Lusignan kings. French Gothic with Ottoman minarets.
  • Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (Famagusta): Former St. Nicholas Cathedral, rival of Notre-Dame. Most imposing Gothic facade on the island.
  • Bellapais Abbey: Romantic monastery ruins with Gothic cloisters, overlooking the northern coast.
  • Crusader Castles: St. Hilarion (fairytale-like on the summit), Kantara (eastern watchtower), Buffavento (highest castle, difficult to access). All three control the Kyrenia mountain range.
  • Kolossi Castle: Square keep of the Knights Hospitaller near Limassol.

This blend of Western Gothic and Oriental repurposing (cathedrals as mosques) is unique in the world and makes Northern Cyprus particularly fascinating for architecture enthusiasts.
