Roman Mosaics
The floor mosaics of Paphos (UNESCO) are among the most significant of the ancient world. In the villas of the Roman upper class (2nd–5th centuries AD), mythological scenes were depicted with a level of detail and color that still impresses after 2,000 years:
- House of Dionysos: 14 mosaic rooms with scenes of the wine god, hunting, the four seasons
- House of Aion: 5 large-format panels with Leda and the Swan, the birth of Dionysos
- House of Theseus: Theseus defeats the Minotaur in the labyrinth
- Kourion (House of Eustolios): Fish, birds, and the personified “Ktisis” (Creation)
Other important mosaics: in the Panagia Kanakaria (Byzantine, 6th century, partially looted and recovered) and in the Kykkos Monastery (modern but impressive).
