San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama is a small oasis village at an altitude of 2,440 meters, which has established itself as a base camp for exploring the Atacama Desert. The dusty main street Caracoles is lined with tour agencies, restaurants, artesanía shops, and cozy hostels — a charming mix of adventure base and relaxed travel destination.

The village itself is quickly explored: The Iglesia de San Pedro (1745) with its cactus wood roof is one of the oldest churches in Chile, and the Museo Arqueológico Gustavo Le Paige showcases 4,000 years of Atacameño history — including mummies, ceramics, and textiles from pre-Columbian cultures.

The true magic lies outside of San Pedro: Within a 100-kilometer radius, some of the planet's most breathtaking natural landscapes await. Plan at least 3–4 full days for the Atacama.

Altitude Adjustment

San Pedro is at 2,440 m, many excursions lead to 4,000–4,500 m. The altitude is no joke: altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, shortness of breath) can affect anyone. On the first day, only light activities, drink plenty of water (3–4 liters), Mate-de-Coca tea helps. Plan geysers and lagoons at 4,000+ meters only from the second or third day.

💡 Tipp

The tour agencies in San Pedro offer all the same tours — but prices vary significantly. Compare at least three agencies. And: The "Astronomy Tour" is an absolute must — book with one that has telescopes (not just laser pointers). The best: SPACE and Atacama Desert Stargazing.
